Essential Kit for Every Rambler. Must-haves for Cornwall’s Terrain

Cornwall is an incredible place to explore on foot. From windswept clifftops and muddy moorland to sandy paths, hidden coves and historic mining trails, our landscape is as beautiful as it is varied. But with ever-changing weather and underfoot conditions, having the right kit can make the difference between a joyful ramble and a soggy slog.

Whether you’re new to rambling or a seasoned Cornish path-basher, here’s my essential kit list for tackling Cornwall’s terrain comfortably, safely and confidently.
1. Good Footwear (Non-Negotiable)
Cornish paths can change under your feet in minutes; dry and dusty one moment, muddy and slippery the next. A solid pair of walking boots or trail shoes is the single most important bit of kit you’ll own.

What to look for:
Waterproof or water-resistant (hello boggy paths and surprise puddles)
Good ankle support for uneven ground
A grippy sole for rocky coastal paths and steep descents
For shorter, drier rambles, trail shoes can work well, but for longer coastal or moorland walks, boots will always win.
2. Waterproof Jacket (Even When It’s Sunny)
Cornwall has a habit of throwing all four seasons at you in one walk. A lightweight, breathable waterproof jacket is essential - even if the sky is blue when you set off.

Top tip: Avoid bulky coats. A packable waterproof you can easily stuff into your rucksack is ideal.
3. Layers, Layers, Layers
Wind on the coast can make it feel far colder than inland, while sheltered valleys can suddenly feel warm. Layers allow you to adapt as conditions change.

My go-to layering combo:
Moisture-wicking base layer
Lightweight fleece or insulated mid-layer
Waterproof outer layer
Avoid cotton where possible as once it’s wet, it stays wet.
4. A Comfortable Rucksack
A decent rucksack keeps everything organised and your hands free. You don’t need anything huge for a day ramble, but comfort is key.

Look for:
Padded shoulder straps
Chest or waist strap for stability
Enough space for layers, snacks and water
Bonus points if it has an external pocket for easy snack access.
5. Water and Snacks (Always)
Even shorter rambles can feel longer on hilly coastal paths. Staying fuelled and hydrated makes a huge difference.

Essentials to pack:
A refillable water bottle
Easy-to-eat snacks (think flapjacks, protein bars, fruit or crisps)
Cornwall’s views are best enjoyed with a snack stop.
6. Sun Protection (Yes, Really)
Cornwall’s coastal paths are often exposed, and even on breezy days the sun can be strong.

Don’t forget:
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
A hat or cap
Sunburn and sea views don’t mix well.
7. Navigation Tools
While many Cornish routes are well-trodden, it’s easy to miss a turning or lose signal in remote areas.

Good options include:
Offline maps on your phone (I use and swear by iWalk Cornwall)
A physical OS map
A fully charged phone (or power bank for longer walks)
Never rely on signal alone.
8. Blister Care & Basic First Aid
Nothing ruins a ramble faster than a blister halfway in.

Pack:
Blister plasters
A small first aid kit
Any personal medication you may need
It’s one of those things you hope not to use – but you’ll be glad you packed it.
Microfibre Towel (For Sea Dips & Paddles)
One of the joys of rambling in Cornwall is that the sea is never far away. Whether it’s a spontaneous paddle, a brave dip, or just sitting barefoot at the water’s edge, a microfibre towel is a surprisingly useful bit of kit.

Why it’s worth packing:
Lightweight and compact
Dries quickly (perfect for changeable weather)
Takes up very little room in your rucksack
Even if you don’t end up getting in, it’s handy for drying feet, sitting on damp rocks, or wrapping up against a coastal breeze.
A gentle safety note: If you do fancy a dip, always be mindful of tides, currents and water temperature. Cold water can be a shock, even on warm days, so take it slow, listen to your body, and never feel pressured to get in. A paddle counts just as much.
10. Optional but Brilliant Extras

Depending on the route and season, these can be game-changers:
Walking poles for steep or uneven terrain
Gloves and a beanie in colder months
A sit mat for snack breaks with a view
Embracing the Cornwall Mindset
Rambling in Cornwall is about more than ticking off miles. It’s about slowing down, leaning into the elements, and allowing space for moments of joy, whether that’s a flask stop with a view, a windswept clifftop pause, or an unexpected paddle at the end of a walk.

Many Cornish Ramblings routes pass beaches, coves or sheltered spots where you might want to linger a little longer. Having the right kit means you can say yes to those moments when they arise, comfortably, safely, and on your own terms.
Final Thoughts
Rambling in Cornwall isn’t about having the most expensive kit, it’s about being prepared for whatever the landscape (and weather) throws your way. With the right essentials, you can focus on what really matters: fresh air, good company and those unbeatable Cornish views.
If you’re ever unsure what to bring on one of our Cornish Ramblings walks, feel free to ask, I’m always happy to help. And if you’re just starting out, remember: everyone begins somewhere. Lace up, layer up, and start on foot.
Happy rambling 🤍
